Flexibility in otherwise consistent non-breeding movements of a long-distance migratory seabird, the long-tailed skua
2017
Quantifying within- and between-individual variation in animal migration strategies is a first step towards our understanding of the ability of migrants to adjust to changes in the en - vironment. We studied consistency (or, conversely, flexibility) in movement patterns at large (>1000 km) to meso-scales (100−1000 km) during the non-breeding season of the long-tailed skua Stercorarius longicaudus, a long-distance migratory Arctic seabird, using light-based geolocation. We obtained 97 annual tracks of 38 individuals and quantified similarity between routes. Overall, tracks of the same individual were generally within about 200 to 300 km of their previous year’s route, and more similar than t…
Parathyroid Autotransplantation During Thyroid Surgery: A Novel Technique Using a Cell Culture Nutrient Solution
2016
Introduction: Parathyroid autotransplantation is an easy procedure with a low complication rate. We adopted the transplantation into the sternocleidomastoid muscle, which allows an easier and time-saving surgical procedure using the same surgical incision. Methods: In this study, we retrospectively reviewed the records of 396 consecutive patients, who underwent total thyroidectomy for benign thyroid disease. In all cases in which a parathyroid was damaged or inadvertently removed, the gland was transplanted; before the autotransplantation, the parathyroid tissue was put in a cell culture nutrient solution for 5 min, afterward fragmented, and then was transplanted in the sternocleidomastoid …
Considerazioni tassonomiche e cariologiche sulle popolazioni siciliane di Sternbergia colchiciflora Waldst. & Kit. (Amaryllidaceae)
2004
A citotaxonomic study on two Sicilian populations of Sternbergia colchiciflora from Madonie and Mt. Etna was carried out. They show marked differences in their morphology and caryology. This suggests to treat them as two distinct taxa, but their correct taxonomic position needs further investigation on other populations of Sternbergia colchiciflora from Mediterranean area
What Is the Role of Minimally Invasive Mitral Valve Surgery in High-Risk Patients? A Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies
2016
Background. Minimally invasive valve surgery is related to certain better postoperative outcomes. We aimed to assess the role of minimally invasive mitral valve surgery in high-risk patients. Methods. A systematic literature review identified eight studies of which seven fulfilled criteria for metaanalysis. Outcomes for a total of 1,254 patients (731 were conventional standard sternotomy and 523 were minimally invasive mitral valve surgery) were submitted to meta-analysis using random effects modeling. Heterogeneity and subgroup analysis with quality scoring were assessed. The primary end point was early mortality. Secondary end points were intraoperative and postoperative outcomes and long…
The essay nalyzes the connection of "Il Cicerone" by Giancarlo Passeroni with the humorous and digressive literature, especially with Sterne's work.
Risk factors influencing the outcome after surgical treatment of complicated deep sternal wound complications.
2003
Background: Median sternotomy is the most frequently used incision for cardiac procedures but carries a substantial risk for deep sternal wound infections and/or sternal dehiscence. In contrast to previous studies that examined risk factors for sternal infections this study evaluates factors that lead to poor outcome after surgical revision of the non healing sternum. Methods: Between 1985 and 1999, 193 adults (mean age 64 ± 9 years, m/f = 3/1) necessitated sternal revisions (incidence 1.93%). Pre-, intra- and post-operative risk factors were evaluated for their influence on the outcome after sternal revision. Results: 65 of the 193 patients had a complicated course: ten (5.2%) died due to …
Results of mitral valve repair for Barlow disease (bileaflet prolapse) via right minithoracotomy versus conventional median sternotomy: a randomized …
2011
Objective: The results of mitral repair for complex Barlow valves are adequate and support earlier intervention. It is unknown whether these results are reproducible in the context of minimally invasive surgery via right minithoracotomy. Methods: We randomized patients with Barlow mitral disease (bileaflet prolapse) to have conventional open repair via median sternotomy (MS group) or minimally invasive (MI group) repair. Repair was done using polytetrafluoroethylene chordal reimplantation for both leaflets. In the MI group, we adopted right minithoracotomy, peripheral cannulation, external aortic clamping, and surgery under direct vision. Results: Both groups comprised 70 patients. The oper…
Three-Year Results of Repaired Barlow Mitral Valves via Right Minithoracotomy versus Median Sternotomy in a Randomized Trial
2012
Objectives: To clarify whether the results of repair of a complex mitral lesion (Barlow valve) at the intermediate-term follow-up are independent of the mode of surgical access [minithoracotomy vs. median sternotomy (MS)]. Methods: In a prospective randomized study of mitral repair for Barlow disease using either a minimally invasive (MI) approach or MS, we achieved an average follow-up of 3 years (echocardiography, physical examination and quality of life). Mitral repair was achieved with polytetrafluoroethylene chordal implantation for both leaflets. Results: Both groups inclu…
The essay deals with the seventeenth novels (especially by Fielding, Sterne and Diderot) on Promessi Sposi's drawing up, especially on its early version, Fermo e Lucia.
Il filtro francese: Frénais et C.ie nella diffusione europea di Sterne
1990
Il saggio analizza le prime traduzioni francesi e italiane del "Tristram Shandy" e del "Sentimental Journey". The essay analyzes the first french and italian translations of Tristram Shandy and Sentimental Journey.
